Luggage And Bags: Rucksack - A comfortable rucksack to carry all your equipment is essential.
The most important thing is that you take a rucksack that sits comfortably.
A sleeping bag is vital and it must be warm enough for below freezing conditions. Down bags are most common for mountaineering.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: A 'layer' system works well: a change or two of underwear and a T-shirt of two, a winter shirt and a jersey, one pair of shorts and one pair of jeans, a lightweight but warm jacket, and then a good rain jacket, preferably of gortex material which 'breathes'. A track suit is also useful.
On long hikes, underwear, socks and T-shirts can be washed en-route and dried on top of your rucksack.
Socks - Are something you must not be skimp on.
Peaked cap or sun hat and sun glasses.
Footwear - For long hikes in the 'Berg you need boots. Wear them in first!!!
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Utilities - store in a waterproof container: torch with spare batteries, dry matches or a lighter, compass - make sure you know how to use it! Maps - Very essential for hiking in the 'Berg. Never leave without one of the area and ensure that at least one [preferably more people] know how to use them.
Tent - Please don't hike with a tent that will not be able to withstand a 90 - 100 km/h wind.
Stove - A good stove is essential for surviving in the 'Berg, especially in the winter when you need to melt snow to obtain water. Stoves are primeraly used for cooking food and boiling water. Any form of gas stove will be appropriate. Fires are not allowed in the Drakensberg!!!!
