Favorite Thing: The Drakensberg is a hiker`s paradise. In this 240,000ha world of sheer cliffs, deeply incised valleys and crystal clear rivers, the hiking experiences are endless.
There are hikes and walks to suit most needs. These range from a gentle stroll to an extremely strenuous hike.
A comprehensive hiking guide is available for purchase at the visitor centres at camp offices and at the main entrance gates to the various areas. The brochure shows a map of the Park and the network of hiking paths.
Fondest Memory: Garden Castle is our favourite area, which we have been visiting annually for the last 15 years.
Garden Castle is the southern most part of the Drakensberg.
Dominated by the Rhino, a 3051m Peak which extends about 2km from the main escarpment, the area is characterized by many unusual sandstone buttresses and other formations.
The wildlife is diverse and the walks particularly scenic with many rock art sites in the sandstone caves and overhangs.
A challenging hike takes visitors from 1840m up to the top of the Rhino with the reward of magnificent views from Lesotho to East Griqualand.
Overnight hikers have the choice of numerous caves or may use a tent to camp but must carry all other requirements for their hike.
There are 5 hiking trails with the Rhino coverering about 18 km and graded severe to extreme, as the most difficult.
