Well, this is the Hilton, so I think it needs no introduction. We stayed here since hubby's hilton card got us a free upgrade to the executive floor. Over there, you'll get free drinks round the clock + usage of internet. Quite a cool deal. Umm, maybe not so cool. This only encouraged hubby to check on his emails and work around the clock. So much for a holiday!
Cost USD99 for an exec room + internet + drinks round the clock + breakfast. Book online for better discounts.
Unique Qualities: Why I like this place: 1)Stunning view of the Opera House 2)Close to Ho An Kiem Lake 3)Excellent eatery down the road -the Emperor. 4)Staff gave us a good intro to Vietnamese artists + where to buy gd pieces. 5)You can clock star alliance miles over here

Try to stay on the executive floor if you decide to camp at Hilton Hanoi. You'll get a stunning view of the Opera House . We opted for the 6th floor since it's a non-smoking room and it won't stink as much.
Tip: Try to book online , you'll get a huge discount and reasonable rates.
Unique Qualities: Note: Folks say that the opera house was built to look like Opera garnier in France. But frankly, I don't see the resemblance.

Phan Thai Hotel / Camellia Hotel 4: Staying in the Old Quarters

WARNING: Do take this review with a pinch of salt as standards have been slacking here lately. Further checks with other travellers revealed that many have mistaken Camellia Hotel 2 for this hotel so do take note of it before you book your accomodations.
If you're keen to see what life in the Old quarters is like, you'll need to stay in a hotel in close proximity with the buzz of activity. Thanks to another VTer's recommendation, guell, I found a nice hotel smack right in the centre of the quarters.Phan Thai Hotel was excellent choice. Service was good and they had every facility to make you feel comfortable. Best of all, ODC travel service was right at their doorstep! I booked my Perfume Pagoda and Halong Bay trip over there.
TIP: Try to book a deluxe rm, it's on the upper floors, far away from the buzz of the traffic
Unique Qualities: Why I like this place: 1)Close to Ho An Kiem Lake 2)Cheap Laundry Servies 3)Deluxe Rm (US$26) had a balcony overlooking rooftops in the Old Quarters, attached bathroom with hot water, bathtub and toiletries. 4)Free Internet, Cable TV 5)ODC travel at front lobby 6)Money changing services
