Apocalypse Now: Most Famous Bar in Saigon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nightlife Spot: Apocalypse Now

I went club hopping with my hubby and his insomniac French and American colleagues one night. Decided on this place as Lonely Planet ( the English and French version), the bible for all clueless travellers, said it was the hottest spot in town.

We hit it all right, drank our magaritas there and danced silly on the techno-lighted dance floor. We were sane enought though, to leave the pool table and cafe alone.

So was the Lonely Planet accurate? Ok, it was a hot spot but all the fun was somewhat watered down by the presence of 2 vigilant policemen in the club. What the hell were they were doing there anyway? They stood there all night, ram-rod straight with a funny expression. Well, perhaps, they were just tormented by all the hot music and unable to dance in those stiff green uniforms.

The coolest thing about this joint is that it's situated in the joint I was putting up at ( Caravelle Hotel ). Figured I could just stagger back to my room if I get pissed drunk. But that's hardly possible with a protective husband so I'll go on to the next good point: Saigon Saigon has one of the best views in the city. It's on a floor even higher than the watering hole at the top of Rex Hotel so you can see for miles around. Go there early and ask for a seat beside the balcony. Chill out and just listen to the live band as you see the going ons at night.

Carmen Bar: The Club with the Best Band

How often do you step into a club only to realise that the band or DJ suck big time? All too often, I suppose. Not at this place though, the band here is excellent as does the Vietnamese singer who sang in Spanish all night long. This place is a favourite with the locals and a great place to chill out with a magarita. I preferred this place to the loud pit stop at Apocalypse Now.

Guess the only thing that bothered me was the steep staircase and the small, cavern-like entrance that was more suited for Dr Evil's mini-me. Sigh, I think I hit my head before I entered.

My Hubby's French Colleague wanted to go this place after the French Lonely Planet proclaimed that it was worth checking out. Even though it was not the real thing, sigh. Well, we went there by cab and I'm quite sure I could hear his french jaw drop with a dull thud when we reach there. The place was completely empty and this was TGIF!

"Zees, iz the right plaze? "

Oui, it was. The shop came complete with fake Hard Rock T-shirts. Well, since we were there, we decided to humour the disappointed French sod and sit with him for a round of drinks. Of course, we scooted off immediately after we finished. Particularly me, because I saw more than one amused cockroach scuttling around the premises and checking us out. C'est Abominable! We'll never rely on the French edition of Lonely Planet any more after this.

TIP: Though this place is listed under Patricia Shultz's "1000 places to see before you die", I feel that it is over-hyped. Not a must see, in my opinion.

This place is simply known as the REX ROOFTOP BAR but I call it the 'elephant bar' as the whole place is eccentrically decorated with bird cages and a blue elephant.
Now before you think I got a thing for elephants and birdies, let me just tell you that I went because of all the hype I heard.
Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype. I really disappointed to find out that it was several levels lower than "Saigon Saigon" (another watering hole at Caravelle Hotel).
    Well, no point staying right?
I went to Saigon Saigon for a better view of the city.
