Do a little bit of reading before you visit the palaces of Seoul, if not they will just be another nondescript Chinese architecture to you. There's a lot of sad, sad history behind these palace walls. What struck me particulary was the assassination of their queen within the palace walls of Gyeongbokgung. Not only was she killed, her body was badly burnt...you can read more about it over here

It seems that almost every palace in seoul has a sad story behind it. To belittle the Korean spirit, this former summer palace was demoted to a zoo during the Japanese occupation. The palace was only restored to its former glory in the 1980's, long after the war. Though not as grand as Gyeongbokgung, this place is still worth a look. Take a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of Seoul and go to lovely , quiet place. For the same admission ticket, you get to go to Jongmyo via a footpath.

Things To Do: Secret Garden / Biwon in Changdeokgung

Not too long ago, a secret haven rests within the heart of Seoul. Beautiful and unseen, this garden was the secret backyard of the Korean royalty who, no doubt, would not have any trouble skinny dipping or sunbathing in the buff if they wanted to. Today, of course, all that exculsivity and royalty is gone. The last princess died in Changdeok more than a decade ago and ordinary mortals like us can see this beautiful garden if we pay about $4 . The admission fee also includes a guide so it is not all that bad.

I popped into this place as it was just adjacent to the hotel which I was staying in. Yes, I looked out the window from Koreana HOtel one morning and saw a beautiful cherry tree in full bloom. I went down to take a look and was surprised to find a small palace there. Apart from the beautiful rows of cherry trees. there was a musuem, a gigantic bell and the statue of King Sejong and some colourful royal guards. Go to this place only after you have seen the bigger Gyeongbokgung and beautiful Changdeokgung.

A special festival takes place here on the first Sunday in May but on an ordinary day, there's nothing really spectacular here. But since it adjoins ChangGyeonggung, just take a stroll over here in the lovely, quiet grounds where you see lots of ancient ancestral shrines. You'll also see lots of lots of pensioners here taking a jog.

Things To Do: Get out of Seoul !

Now if you're reading this hoping to get a tip on Itaewon, Lotte World and irritating Ginseng Factories, you need to go elsewhere. The best of Korea, I feel is out of Seoul, just take a plane, bus or train out of this place and....
Scale the peaks in Mt Sorak.......dance in the flowered fields of Jeju........explore little snowy towns
To travel to these place, you can hop on a plane at Gimpo Airport or take a bus from DongSeoul Bus Station or Seoul Express Bus Station.

Come every spring, Yungjungno, an otherwise quiet street springs to life with a 5km stretch of Cherry Blossom Trees, irritating street vendors, buskers and lots of locals . It's an event like no other. This street btw, is on the "Manhattan" of Seoul. So, to go there, you need to take the train with other weekend lovin' Seoulites and get into a human stampede in the process. It's well worth the trouble, Yunjungno is the place to be if you love wide open spaces, beautiful parks and a scenic view of the Han River.

Everland: Get out of Seoul! Take a bus to Everland

I am no sucker for theme parks but a thrill seeker. So when someone told me that the scariest rides were in Everland, Yongin, I gamely hop on a bus and travelled 40 min to pay good money to scare myself. I wasn't disappointed. I lost count the number of times my stomach lurched at those rides. My favourite was of course the 360 degree ride that turned around and around while suspended in mid-air. The viking came a close second.

Now if you are thinking of milling about the streets of Korea and doing a little shopping, do yourself this favour and go to Insadong instead of Itaewon. Unlike the latter, Insadong is a cool little street where you can find other things other than fake hard rock t-shirts, counterfeit louis vuitton , vcds, etc. Yes, if none of these interest you, pop down to Insadong and you'll find interesting antique shops, calligraphy shops, quaint tea houses and lots and lots of art galleries. Littered on the sidewalks are also quaint little sculptures like this frog.
Insadong street is closed to traffic on Sundays and shopping is a lot more fun then!

City Hall: Take a High Speed Train to Busan

SKorea launched its first high speed train(KTX train) sometime in April 2004. I was very lucky to be the first few passengers to try it. I took a high speed train to Busan and it took about 3 hours. It was pretty much a smooth ride but the seats were rather narrow and you can really feel like a sardine if you have long legs. The ride cost about 45,000won. To catch the train, take a subway to their spanking new Seoul station in the heart of the city. Buy your ticket from the counter ( Just say , "Busan", "KTX" ) and hop on the train.
