If beach activities are what you expect most of your stay in Mahajanga: you'll have to nip over Village Touristique or to Amborovy ... because beach in Mahajanga center is not accessable and swimming is not allowed. A thick stone row prevents people from accessing the beach. It's not like in Toamasina (East coast) where you have access to the urban beach (it is not recommended to swim there however but you can walk by).
In Mahajanga urban area, the sea seems too strong, it's not a blue water, rather a red, muddy one, also because a huge river, Betsiboka crashes down in this sea, trailing sediment from land erosions. Hence the variations in colours, mostly ochre, red waters and smetimes deep blue. Whilst in Amborovy (12km from the center) and at the Village Touristique, it's all different... almost still and constantly blue water.
Besides, if you head Northern of the city, you'll reach other beach spots with translucent blue waters. Indeed, as you get away from the lateritic Betsiboka river, sea water doesn't have this red, ochre tint anymore.
However, both in urban seafront and in Amborovy, the sunset is.... like this. I'll let you give the adjectives.
