Staying in Paris and not experiencing a good brasserie ? You have missed something.
For our stay in Aug. 2004, our hotel tariffs didn't include breakfast so, luckily for me, we chose to hae our breakfast outside the hotel. It was an opportunity to experience a Parisian brasserie again. [Btw, it is customary in Paris to have a lunch somewhere, have a coffee at another place. That allows you to try different places.]
We had a classic French breakfast (the one I was used to being a kid, living in Belgium made me change a little bit my bfast: more tartine and no baguette anymore).
Our petit déjeuner was about demi-baguettes beurrées and a warm beverage (either coffee, tea, chocolate or milk). They sometimes serve confitures (jams) with the baguettes. Since none of us needed jam, we skipped it.
I saw that morning (10am) the waiters, the staff getting busy with the noon lunch. They started preparing the dessert, displaying the oysters & the seafood. I saw the cook with his apron, entering the main room then fleeing to his kitchen, returning talking to the main waiter..etc... whilst, tourist me took pictures, watched the scenery with delight, smelling the delicious odour of roasted meat wafting from the kitchen as he opened the door to the kitchen.. hmmmm
At a time, I saw one person placing the plate of berries in a nearby fridge. I saw it ! and would remember it aftewards when my dad suggested chilling out at Le Zeyer while savouring our last hours before heading to Brussels.
If my memory serves me well, le plateau royal (of seafood) was around 60 euros, that doesn't make it for a budget travelling, of course. ;-)
Le Zeyer also has a roofed terrace where to sit soaking up the ambience, having some drinks (esp. a Kro, the French beer, a Pastis, a kir royal) and, for me, enjoying my dish of strawberries, suncurrants, raspberries at 4pm :-)... whilst one can have a look on the streets. The spot was ideally located for some people watching, being on Place Alésia.
Favorite Dish: I really enjoyed my plate of fruits: strawberries, raspberries, suncurrants. I had it whilst chilling out from our Batignolles experience of the whole morning.
It uses to be served as dessert (for the noon lunch). A bit expensive but I love berries. More than 10 euros.. Quand on aime, on ne compte pas.

Restaurant Name: +++ several names in Chinatown +++
Not about a dish in particular. Rather about the area in 13e arrondissement.
For Brussels not having a real Chinatown (only an area with Asian commerce & restaurants, no Asian community residence), wandering in Paris Chinatown has been always special to me.
I talked about Brussels. Yet, this fascination a Chinatown attracted on me started when I first entered a Chinatown in mid-80s. That was in Paris.
For food, I have some taste for Avenue d'Ivry and the smaller streets that connect to it. A whole avenue, packed with Asian restaurants, lacquered ducks and pork meats on windowdisplay. Plus, the area is full of those Chinese style shops with lots of things of different types sold in the same shop. Tang frères rules ! So, if it's not for the restaurant, it's for the shops. The area is always lively.
You can try nearly all South-East Asian cuisines there: not only Chinese-Viet-Thai cuisines. I noticed there were some Japanese restaurants, but in side streets. As a kid, I was brought to a Laotian restaurant there. I don't remember anything of it. Should probably return there to renew the experience. :-)
Favorite Dish: I love many Asian dishes. To name but a few: -Dim Sum; -Many dishes with Sechuan pepper sauce; -Nems & Vietnamese soups. I love the fragrant and tasty Vietnamese dishes; -Lacquered ducks and meat; -Casserole style with cabbage leaves, lacquered pork meat, Chinese mushroom (shi take-like), vegetables. Delicious -Indian cuisine, the different breads included. Still, i'll suggest the North of Paris to try something Indian since this is their quartier. -Japanese dishes (from sushi to vegetables sautés with saké).

Restaurant Name: Orchidée Villa
After experiencing Canal Saint-Martin, we returned to our hotel where we had an appointment with my cousin. We planned to spend the evening together. On the menu: a diner in Chinatown.
We headed then to Avenue d'Ivry. Looked for our favourite Asian restaurant there, missed its location and decided to enter one of most packed restaurants I've ever seen in my whole life. Was very close to Avenue d'Ivry: on Avenue de Choisy.
It was about a permanent Chinese buffet. I recommend the dim sum, a crispy chicken which a spécialité maison, and a sweet-sour pork dough (kouloulou pork ? don't remember exact name), lacquered duck. They have vegetables too there, with broccoli, Chinese mushrooms pepper, ..etc...
Service was attentive.
Was more than satisfied.
Favorite Dish: Good food, cheap (buffet was about 10-11 euros, drinks are not included).
Favourite dish: the crispy chicken (spécialité maison).

Ah! our Asian eatery in 3e arrond. (wouldn't name it a restaurant). After putting down our luggage at the hotel, we decided to eat light since the day before, we were invited by friends and indulged. So, off to the 3e arrond. we headed, thinking of an eatery my parents knew. In front of the door, it said it was closed for reparation. Since the street is part of Chinatown, we could stay in the area. To not lose time browsing for another known place, we chose this small eatery on Rue au Maire. Its location was near CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et métiers - science and technology State school that is involved in adults education, research in technology...). No wonder the place was packed with teachers, students and some Asian teens in home turf. We could elbow our way (so to speak) to the table after some wait near the counter. Packed and noisy it was. None shouted but it's just a noise due to the small size of a packed room.
I was outside waiting for my Dad to pay the bill when I saw on the sidewall, there was a handwritten sticker, calling for some "Mechaniciennes pour jupe, chemise et pantalon" and a mobile number. Since most of clandestine Asian immigrants are into textile confections, I guessed it was a job ad for them. I walked a bit further on the same street and saw an open door and its corridor that led to a dusty room, like under construction, wood lumbers here, old wooden stairs there. I saw people in the dark room. Noone could live there, it's just impossible. I didn't enter but the Chinese-like persons in the room saw me and closed the door.... Well, who knows. Maybe those are the clandestine people ?
Favorite Dish: The dishes... I had a Bun Bo Cha Gio (beef, vermicelli and nems bits) and was disappointed. For some extra -euros, the same dish at Brussels's Than Binh is absolutely finger-licking. There should have been soja, cucumber slices.. but we had none of those. Anyway... What would one expect from a lunch at 5 euros, anyway ?
In the contrary, I could try some bits of my Mum's dish and it was yummy. I couldn't see its name but since kid, I knew it is named Koulou pork, some pork ribs in dough and with dark sweet and sour sauce.
In soup section, there seems to be many styles. My dad had a soup, my neighbours had soups but they seem all different: chicken, tripes, lungs, liver...
Also, I saw many clients, mostly Asians who probably work in the area, who ordered their meal, waited in line and took the plastic bags away when ready.

Self-Service Clichy: No thrills and lunch amongst postmen

Restaurant Name: Self-Service Clichy
This is where my Mum brought us after visiting Les Batignolles. When she talked about a self-service eatery that used to cater for postmen (there used(s?) to be a post office nearby), I was interested to see how it looked like. We could have gone in big names. Still, I wanted to see the everyday life of the average people.
Same as for our Asian eatery in 3e arrond. (can't talk about restaurant) prior the visit of le Bassin & le Canal. It was near CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et métiers - science and technology State school). I think my Mum knows where salarymen of some categories use to eat.
In the self-service, I saw salarymen & women dining amongst externals (such as me) in this green and gold déco. The walls were plastered with green and gold foil that made it look like Chinese styled with bamboo drawing. Special. Also, some tables were held in some huge iron birdcages. I forgot their name in French, I'll tell you later. In fact, my Mum guessed it right that I may like the style. Like Art Déco meets Art Nouveau cantine. How about that ? lol
Pic is dark since the room itself is.
Favorite Dish: Dishes were about grill dishes, everyday life dishes in French cantines: entrées (light hors d'oeuvres: vegetable & ham, egg, thon mayonaise & peach halves) then main courses: chops, fish, roasted chicken + fries. To accompany with meats: peas & carrots, spinach, green beans, rice, fries... as I said, no big thrills.
Desserts: a choice between flan, pies, mouse au chocolat...etc...
I had a "poulet frites" and that was enough for me. Just good considering the price.
