The only way to hike in to see the mountain Gorillas is to buy a permit for $325 per day, which includes a guided hike to the Gorillas, and each group of 8-10 people is accompanied by 4 soldiers as well. This is the park headquarters where the treks are organized, groups are selected, and a briefing is given. |
| | The drive to the trailhead There is about a 25 minute drive to the trailhead from the park headquarters. These are the mountains located where Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo come together where the Mountain Gorillas live. This is the only place in the world where Mountain Gorillas live, and it is estimated that there are only 700-800 left. |
| | At the trail head, getting ready for the hike. Each group has 2 soldiers in front of us and two behind. I don't know if the armed soldiers are there to protect us from poachers or bandits or the human gorillas in the Congo war (the gorillas live in the border area with the Congo).
