Squeezed in between most stunning alpine terretory it has withstood many wars and it's history is vividly depicted at SCHLOSS AMBRAS -- where, one is told, some ghosts are still haunting today....!
If you are one for the odd and bizarre, you should visit the "gallery of freaks" in same castle --- One of the many kings who inhabited the old walls had a thing for paintings of freaks of the time.
WARNING*** If you should be up there on an empty stomach - DON'T, for it is really gruesome!!!
But apart from this dark gallery the Castle and the city of Innsbruck are alive with culture and beautiful artifacts.
I grew up in the Tirol, so am a bit biaist when I say - It's one of the best places I have ever been too.
It's vicinity to Italy, Germany, Switzerland make it an ideal spot to explore 3 countries in a day. Have breakfast in Austria, Lunch in Bavaria, and coffee in Italy :)
If you ever go there, you should visit one of the many "Zelt-Feste" (Tent-festivals). Apart from the beer you will find a most unusual dancing crowd of guys, slapping themselves on bums and thighs while jodeling their lungs out. A true spectacle - but: Don't try this at home - hahah!

Cycling looks a nice way to get around, its so scenic, and I bet the air is lovely and fresh too!
Could not do Innsbruck the last time around .Maybe I'll find the time in April 08 when I continue my European adventures.Lovely place indeed.
