Vienna - Wien. I have a love-hate relationship with this city. On one hand it is attractive from it's cultural side - but living there (which I have for 5 years) means you will find out, that the true "Viennese" is quite a moaner (in the nicest way possible of course) The best thing about Vienna are it's many coffee houses. And if you are up to try REAL coffee, then try the "Fig Coffee" - a reminder of the Turkish invasion, who's hero "Prinz Eugene" (a lil guy 5.2') has his very own statue on a huge horse at the "Hofburg". There is much to say about Vienna and I will soon put all my knowledge of this city in a nice travel-report... but for now, I am off for coffee and some continental breakfast. Vienna Phrases: Hello & Good bye = Servus Yammiii! Iris |
THE THIRD MAN - what you didn't know! The Timmermanns' "Der dritte Mann" tour allows Vienna visitors and film buffs to retrace the steps of Orson Welles (as Harry Lime) and Joseph Cotten (as Holly Martins) when they made this movie in 1948, under the direction of Carol Reed. A third of all the scenes in The Third Man were shot on location in (and under) Vienna. One site used for the filming of the classic sewer scenes is included in the tour, although Orson Welles took one whiff of underground Vienna before refusing to continue filming there. His sewer scenes were later shot in a London studio, but many underground shots in the finished film were actually filmed in Vienna. HERE is a website with each location & images of the original movie> http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/thir dman/thirdman.html |
A echta Weana! (A real Viennese) This is the answer to "Al Bundy" ---- Hr. Mundl! Only that we had the slob 20 years earlier as a hillarious series on television taking the mickey out of the working class average viennese famliy life... Phrases to learn: "Nudlaug" (meaning litteraly noodle-eye) "Heast oide" (trying to get attention from wife) "Bist deppad?" (are you stupid?) "Gschissti gschassti" (there is no translation possible haha it means something like "silly-stuff") |

matcrazy1 Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:37 UTC Very interesting and accurate opinions on Vienna. I was there many times but I managed to visit only a few main attractions... I should pack and go again - it's only 4-5 hours from my place. | FRONA Fri May 19, 2006 09:58 UTC Gruss Dich, muss Hundertwasser noch besuchen ;-) Bist Du jetzt in ZuidAfrika? | Peter123 Mon May 1, 2006 06:43 UTC As a kid speaking Hungarian and growing up in Romania I remember using "Servus" for good bye and hello. I never knew that it was used in Vienna too. As far as I know it is used in Hungary too. | unravelau Sat Apr 22, 2006 13:25 UTC A brief but interesting trip around Vienna thank you Iris. After a weekend of disillusionment, hurt and grandchild emergencies it was just so refreshing and joyous to come to your pages of hope and life. |
