If you are planning to go around SF, just leave your car at home or the parking lot unless you know for sure that whereever you are going has parking. It's just not worth the 45 minutes you'll go around to find parking or the $35 tickets you will get! If you are at a hotel downtown you'll be much better of taking a taxi than pay for parking anyways.

Areas especially to avoid are Financial district during the day, Marina, Northbeach and Downtown anytime.

SF is not a particularly dangerous city, but there are still some rough neighborhoods. In downtown SF, the mood of the neighborhood can change in just a couple of blocks. Therefore it is important where to avoid.

As a general rule, as you go towards the water you'll run into much nicer neighborhoods.

At night, avoid south of market street. actually, the good /safer areas start around Post street - unless you are at the Union street area, try not to go below Post. Better yet, look at your map and try to avoid the Tenderloin area! Ironically, some good bars and clubs are in the Tenderloin, just take a taxi straight to the club.

Mission can be rough if you don't know where to go, although there are a lot of bars and restaurants in the area. Don't walk around Mission; take a taxi or drive your car to whereever you are going to.
