"Zwevezele - Quite a happening place" Zwevezele by Groentje

Zwevezele is a nice place

No really, it is! I've come to enjoy Zwevezele a lot. They do a lot for their citizens, even though it's kind of a small village. It's actually a part of Wingene, although you will never hear someone from Zwevezele say that (s)he's a "Wingenoare". History and earlier conflicts will always stay...
Which you can see in the local football derby, which will not take place in the coming years, because of the relegation of Zwevezele from the 3rd league.
Things they do for their citizens? Well, every now and then there's sth they do, such as Carnaval in February, Hille Kermis in June, all kinds of celebrations around 11 July (which they share with Wingene: one year it's in W, the other in Z), ...
It's also a quiet region, with lots of green and a nice park.

Carnaval is a good reason to visit Zwevezele. Each year in the beginning of February there's a parade going through the streets of Zwevezele, which is really nice to watch. A lot of groups put a lot of effort into making these cars, and actually take months of preparation into account!
When you're joining the parade, the weeks before the actual parade are also a lot of fun. Not only are you building your car with your friends (hopefully), you are also part of a big movement of people! Two candidate Princes Carnaval (accompanied by their female counterpart, or "Roosjes") compete for this title, putting posters, signs and other promo material literally everywhere.
A couple of weeks before the parade the candidates go around the surrounding villages to raise votes in a big parade of cars. Prince Carnaval is then chosen one week before the parade during a whole celebratory evening, which is the start of the carnaval week. The Saturday before carnaval there's the official opening of the carnaval weekend, and a pub crawl (kroegentocht), including all the best pubs of Zwevezele. Make sure you get a costume if you want to go as everyone's dressed up.
Sunday is the day of the parade (hopefully without rain), and after that there's a big party in the village itself, a great way to let go of all your angst and stress before the parade!
