Largest departemento in Peru

Loreto is the largest departemento in Peru and covers approx. 29 por cent of the country.
The capital is Iquitos (see travellog) , 106 meter over see level and accessible from the Atlantic See by ships or by air. There is no roads to Iquitos.
The region is covered with dense Amazona rain forrest. The greatest river in the world, the Amazon river, with all its water ways through the district, make communication by river the most important way of transportation.
From the capital Iquitos you can go by air to the cities of Yurimaguas, Tarapoto, Pucallpa, Juanjui, Caballococha, Cuzco and Trujillo and also to some international airports like Miami in USA and Manaos in Brazil.

Timber transportation on the river

The wood industry is in its developing phase, for the moment an annual production of sawed timber of approx. 40 000 cubic meters.
In the jungle there is also great findings of petroleo that is under exploation.
The caouchouk exploatation epoch was from 1890 till 1910. At that time caouchouk plants that had been brought to Asia successfully had aclimatized. The caouchouk trees were hard exploted in Peru and the production of caouchouk had got more dificil. The peruvian industry could not compete with the English and Dutch caouchouk industry in Asia, where transportation was easier and the cost of labour was low.
