The castle San Lorenzo de El Escorial was built by Filip II in 1563-1584. Its sparsely ornamented style gave base for a new architectural style in Spain called "desornamentado". The castle nowadays has very rich collections of art. It also contains a royal panteón where all the Kings and Queens are put to rest. El Escorial is also a monastery, founded in 1567, by the Augustiner monks. |
| | The buildings are very big and it is amazing that people in that time could build such a construction in just 20 years. |
