The great hero Jose Olaya was borne here!

Favorite thing: In the struggle for independencia contra the Spanish Crown the fisherman from Chorrillos, Jose Silverio Olaya Balandra, gave his life.
The city of Lima was occupied by the Spaniards and the new peruvian government, the parlament and the tribunes had temporarly been transfered to Callao. Olaya served as the secret link between Callao and the patriot groups that still were in Lima. He swam all the distance across the bay back and forth. He was finally captured and cruely tortured but did not reveal his true mission. He was executed in the morning 29 Juni 1823, in the Plaza de Armas, the same day as his village Chorrillos nowadays celebrate their Santo Patrón, San Pedro.
The statue is erected at Malecon, Chorrillos.
