The land of Jauja

Jauja - the first Spanish capital in Peru

Plaza Mayor
The city of Jauja was founded by Francisco Pizarro the 26th of Octobre 1533, and was declared the 25th April 1534 as the capital for the government of Nueva Castilla, which ment the first capital of Peru.
In the struggle for independence, Jauja was the centre of the royalists and was damaged in the war.
Jauja is situated in the beautiful valley of of the river Mantaro, not far from Huancayo.
An interresting note is, that in Spain the "land of Jauja" means a land of aboundance. Perhaps it was the look of the rich valley of river Mantaro, that gave the conquistadores the impression that this was a region of aboundance and that they for that reason gave it the name "Jauja".
Hospital building

Glimpses of the history

During the first half of th 20th century - before the use of the modern antibiotica - Jauja was a well-known place for patients with tubercolosis, the clean and thin air did good for the pullmons.
Many names at the cemetery are "foreigns", most of them probably from a higher economic/social class.
The bakery

Famous bread

The bread in Jauja is famous for its good quality. It is made in stone-owens and with a nutrient flour of good taste, not as white as the "Pan francaise" in Lima.
Take the chance and eat a good sandwhich here, and buy a basket of bread to take with you!
Here a picture from one of the bakeries.

(I hope to in some days/week add a description of how to make a Pachamanca, the traditional cooking in the ground with heated stones. I have put one photo in the HP and there are some good photos to come ...)
