Esperanza: Really Different

My boyfriend found mention of this restaurant in a book called "yank in Yukatan" published in the 60's. He was stoked that we drove by it and had to stop and show it to our waiter and the owner who wanted to copy the pages to frame them to hang in the restaurant. We also needed a beer. The following day was our waiters birthday and his mother in law had cooked him a huge traditional tamale pie (in a buried pit!) He gave us some on the house and gave us some to go too. That was so nice....and it was so good!

update
Sorry this restaurant is now gone. Not a trace left of it.

Favorite Dish: This was about the best Ceveche I've ever had. A huge order for 8 dollars. Miixed seafood with an incredible amount of delicious shrimp. We also split a dinner of Poc Chuk, which was a mixed plate of mexican style pork. Very very good. This is not a bustleling place. It's on 307, and if you are heading south it is just before Xel Ha on your right hand side. It's a huge palapa style restaurant and everything is made fresh...it DOES take a while to get your order, but it was worth the wait.
Updated 2007==sadly this restaurant became history with Hurricane Wilma

A great value! - Playa del Carmen

A great value!

Las Brisas: Worlds Best Lobster?

From our 2003 Visit.
We had read about this place in guide and decided to try this "very affordable" place. What a FIND! It's located just off of 5th, beyond the illuminated street banner for Ajue Lobster. There is not a lot of ambiance, but the food MORE than makes up for that.

Favorite Dish: One of the biggest Lobster tails I have ever had, which was spectacular at only 20 dollars. We also ordered shrimp in garlic, which was great at 8 dollars, but very unnecessary seeing the size of the Lobster. We tried to go back a few times, but since they are a block off of 5th St. they don't get the huge amount of foot traffic from toursts they, usually close a bit before 10pm...and we didn't get back in time, which was a very sad occassion.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2004
We made it back to Los Brisas, and it is still very unassuming and still great. The lobster tail was a bit smaller, but at 18 dollars we had two! They were just as wonderful as we remembered! So 2 lobsters, guacamole, 3 margaritas, 2 pina coladas and dessert. 50 bucks. Perfect! You can eat here cheaper, but we're talking REALLY GOOD LOBSTER! GO FOR IT!

Updated September 2005
Oh well, it was huge while it lasted. We went to Las Brisas again last week, still great prices, still real size cocktails for 2 dollars, but the lobster is shrinking!
Now we understand that they still get the big tails, but the price has gone up. It still seems to be one of the better bargains, just off 5th street. Would go there again in a heartbeat!

Updated 2007--it's still there, but prices are creeping up at Playa expands and it's "this" close to 5th street

Address: One block off of 5th past Ajue Lobster

Comparison: less expensive than average

Price: US$11-20

Yum - Playa del Carmen

El Fogon II: So cheap, so local, so good! El Fogon Review

From 2004
When you are looking for local, go where the locals go. We came here a year ago and could not wait to get back. This is the place to do it cheap.
I HIGHLY recommend the Tacos Al Pastor, at 35 cents each, 50 with cheese, you can eat a ton of them with one of the three great salsas on the table and fill your self up. We also had carne asada which was good and cheap, but it's the al pastor that keeps us coming back. We went twice this year when we needed t get away from the growing crowds on 5th and when our cash was running low for the day. They speak very little english here.

One night we had two orders of guacamole, 8 tacos al pastor, two tacos carne asada, and order of nopales and three margaritas. Our bill was 21 dollars.
For lunch with tacos, a beer, a soda, guacamole it was about 7.50, total.

By the way there is plenty of street parking and the cheapest high speed internet we could find right across the street. One hour, one dollar.
Updated 2007..still as good! Still as cheap!

Favorite Dish: Al Pastor. You can see the guy putting your tacos together. The come with the tiniest slice of grilled pineapple on them, something i've never seen anywhere else. They also serve cactus. Although one night their "nopales" was just a lot of green peppers with some cactus thrown in there.

Address: 30th near Calle 6

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: The blocks are numbered by 5's. So you go from 5th to 10th to 15th, not 1st to 2nd to 3rd.
So 30th sound far, but it's only a few blocks. Still we always took the car.

Price: less than US$10

Lol Ha in Akumal - Playa del Carmen

Lol Ha in Akumal

Lol Ha: Jonesin' for a Burger?

The incredible food in Playa never lets you go hungry. But one day, we were just in the mood for something that screamed home. It was so bad that we even bought a hot dog at the Pemex station. One bite...bad move.
The we found what we craved at Lol Ha at Akumal Beach.

Favorite Dish: These hamburgers were to DIE for. Stuffed with chilies and cheese and served with great fries. You may never crave a hamburger on vacation, but if you do, this is the place.
We went for lunch and stayed the whole afternoon. They make it easy as the huge palapa is right on the sand. Tables on the sand, and even chairs you can lounge in with a nice cold beer or pina colada. There was a storm threatening and at times, appearing, so we'd all just grab our plates, take them to the bar...wait 5 minutes for the sun, and resume postions on the sand.

Address: At Akumal beach.

Directions: Take 307 south. And look for signs to Akumal.

La Parilla - Playa del Carmen

La Parilla

La Parilla: Popular La Parilla Review

From 2003. Everyone loves this place. It's one of the few places that has a line every night. Honestly, we didn' get it. We went in late so maybe everyone was tired. After eating at Las Brisas we were spoiled when it came to lobster. They had a special on small lobster tails, but when we asked what was a better value, those, or splitting one real tail, it seemed to send everyone into a frenzy, as no one could tell us how big the regular tails were. We had to ask to see it, and ordered it, and it was quite good. But our waiter was just below par and I think we may have ticked him off a little.

Favorite Dish: The Lobster of course!

Address: On 5th Street

Blue Lobster - Playa del Carmen

Blue Lobster

Easy to eat Dr. Taco's Review

Since I don't have lots photos of the restaurants, let me just rattle off a few good bets. I don't think I ever had a bad meal in Playa del Carmen. Guacamole was good in every resturant, so was the ceveche and the shrimp.

Even the resturants at Chichen Itza, Xel Ha and Xcaret, which are all tourist attractions were excellent! Stick with Mexican or Mayan food and you'll do great!

Sabor on 5th. Great shrimp in garlic for a great price.

Blue Lobster, just off 5th, you'll pay for it, but 37.50 for a seafood platter for two is great. Two lobster tails, two different fish filets, shrimp, incredible calamari..worth every penny. Skip the lobster bisque, it's more like gravy.

Ajue Lobster, just off 5th. Great food, great presentation, incredible mixed ceviche. Expensive by Mexico standards but worth it. One night everything was perfect, the other night was less than perfect yet still good. Friendly waiters who will torture you (in a good way) with magic and puzzles after dinner.

Yax Che, just off 5th. Mayan food! I found out that I am not a huge fan of Mayan food,(except for Mayan pork tacos...yum!!) but everyone else RAVES about this resturant, Ask to sit in the garden. incredible drinks! Incredible Mayan food. They use a leaf called Chaya in their food, (and in some of their drinks) which I am not a fan of, but if you are adventurous try it!

2003 update. We Revisited Yax Che for Lobster and these WERE HUGE. They have a price tag to go along with it at 39 dollars each. They came grilled with grilled pineapple..not what i wanted but no complaints. Asked for a bit of drawn butter and it was wonderful. They also serve you a complimentary after dinner shot of a mayan liquer and kahlua...wonderful! EXCELLENT service.

Address: All up and down or just off 5th st

Really Different! - Playa del Carmen

Really Different!

Antojillos?: Really Really Local!

If you look at the photo, you can see the kitchen. This woman makes everything right there. Sopas, Tortas, Hurrachas, Tostadas which are just great. This place is so cheap you almost feel guilty. We had one of each, plus a soda and a beer and our bill was around 10 dollars.
No english spoken here!

Favorite Dish: The bbq pork on anything. Watch out for the fresh Habanero Salsa served on the side. Incredibly hot and incredibly good!

Address: If we remember right, it's at the end of 20th.

Comparison: least expensive

Directions: This little place is south of Playa Del Carmen's main area. A few blocks up from the area around Xaman-Ha condos and the Continental hotel near Playacar.

Price: less than US$10
