"Fantastic Walled City" Dubrovnik by Ramonq

Dubrovnik Travel Guide: 1,696 reviews and 4,486 photos

Dubrovnik, one of the most stunningly attractive cities in the world, appears to be built for the modern day tourists, which was furthest from the minds of the town's original planners. The medieval walled city tidily cramped with red tiled roofs of stone houses and majestic churches and palaces within the fortified walls and bastions, complete the perfect combination of beauty and functionality. It is a city for pedestrians where no cars are allowed inside its perimeter allowing millions of tourists to appreciate the wonderful architecture on foot. And the tourists are here in droves, drawn by the Dubrovnik's classical medieval ambience located in the most attractive setting along the rocky Adriatic coasts littered with emerald green islands and islets amidst the clear turquoise waters. Shiploads and busloads of tourists descend upon this walled town which has kept its architecture intact and will remain so owing to its UNESCO World Heritage Site listing, ensuring that tourists in the 25th century would still witness exactly the same visions that I've seen in Dubrovnik, barring war and natural catastrophes.

But Dubrovnik has been visited by wars and catastrophes in its long history. The city has been damaged by earthquakes yet mainly remained intact. Even recently in the last decade of the 20th century, Dubrovnik was damaged during the war caused by the breakup of Yugoslavia. Now under Croatia, Dubrovnik quickly rebuilt the destroyed structures and now appears to have no recollection of that war.

The Stradun is the principal pedestrian walkway that crosses the town. A procession of tourists march along this grand road made of stone. Many of the medieval buildings along the Stradun house shops and restaurants that cater to tourists. I wonder what it was like during the earlier centuries before mass tourism arrived? The buildings would be the same, but the street life would have been very different. If only these walls could talk!
