Mozart!

Salzburg, the town made famous by the child prodigy called Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is proud of its boy. He was born here, but actually did not stay much in this place for a long time, spending gigs on the road even as a young boy and only visiting his parents in-between jaunts around Europe as an adult. In fact, Wolfgang detested the small-town mindedness of Salzburg and wanted to be in the more glamorous metropolis of Paris, Milan or Vienna. There is a saying, you can let the boy out of town, but you cannot let the town out of the boy. However, Salzburg embraces Wolfgang in a big way. His reminders are everywhere, from the house he was born, where he grew up,where he played his concerts. There are restaurants, cafes, pubs, hotels named after him and even round chocolates called Mozartkugeln are sold everywhere, and they're now famous worldwide.

Mozar, mozart, mozart

I don't know why he hated the place because it is a very pleasant town. Surrounded by hills that offer lovely views of this very European city, it is charming, civilised, and cultured. One can see the old panoramic lithographs of old Salzburg in the time of Mozart, and very little has changed in the skyline. The cathedral dome dominates the city's horizon and Tyrolean church spires gracefully offer a nice backdrop.

Salzburg may not be as grand and royal as Vienna, but it does have its share of stately squares and regal gardens. It is just right for your average tourist. I saw Salzburg in winter and in spring 15 years later, and despite the differences in sceneries, the city is perennially picturesque even though it can get uncomfortably cold in winter. It is a great place to visit any time of the year.
