National Park

Mention the country Madagascar, and the first thing that leaps in your mind, pardon the pun, is the lovable lemur. Madagascar is home to a quite a few species of lemurs, a type of mammal which has evolved into the unique creature that we see today. Lemurs belong to the primates group but they have features similar to marsupials and canines. When I first saw the rare Indri Indri lemurs at Andasibe National Park, they reminded me of koala bears in Australia with unusual long hind legs. Lemurs are a fascinating example of mammalian evolution where one can observe traces of characteristics from other creatures. The facial features of the different species of lemurs are so varied and intriguing, they make an interesting study for biologists and natural scientists.. It’s no wonder that you will meet quite a few natural science documentarists and biologists in Madagascar and one of the best places to see the lemurs is in Andasibe, a town southeast of Antananarivo.

Andasibe is a small town in the Central Highlands of Madagascar not far from the capital city. The town is the gateway to the first designated National Park in Madagascar which was commissioned back in 1936 owing to its unique ecosystem. The national park has become a sanctuary for the lemurs which were slowly being depleted because of deforestation by slash and burn farmers who have slowly encroached the habitation of the lemurs. Its proximity to the capital city makes it a popular launchpad to explore the diverse natural ecosystems of Madagascar.

Besides lemurs, Andasibe National Park is lso home to various reptiles, birds, and flora that is endemic only Madagascar. Certain species of chameleons and frogs can be spotted only in this region. I also saw colourful snakes and birds inside the park
