Syria....rich in history and culture......

by Bavavia - last update: Apr 27, 2008

Damascus

Downtown Damascus traffic jams!!
I visited Syria in April 2004. I went alone. Many people ( here in America) said I was crazy, Why go to such a "dangerous country" they all said....Well, my response is " What danger!!!"..there is no danger for tourists there......just because our governments do not agree on issues does not affect the tourist traveling to Syria....I found it one of the easiest places to get around......
It was refreshing to visit a country where no one hassles you... I was able to see incredible historical sites all near eachother in Damascus ....and I was amazed at the old history there. I was very comfortable walking around alone, people were very nice and helpful....a few times( actually several times)!, I got lost walking around...... I would ask for directions and if the person didnt speak English well, he was not able to give me directions, so he would go out of his way to walk me all the way back to my destination to make sure i got there ok.....that is how the people are in Syria, they will do anything to help you if they see you are in need...... Many times i got lost and each time, i had someone walk me back to make sure i got back to where i needed to go....... I doubt you would see that happen here or in many countries.....It is just the culture there...people care about others and will do anything they can to help someone.

My Tourguide, Ossama

This is my tourguide, Ossama. He did an excellent job showing me around Damascus all day. The tour lasted over 10 hours, so i definately got my money's worth. We saw many attractions in Damascus. It was Ossama ( tourguide), the driver, and me. They also inlcuded a lunch as well which i listed in the restaurant section.
