"Big Toys" Fort McMurray by ExGuyParis

Fort McMurray... a truly remarkable place. Far north of Edmonton... I doubt that anyone has ever chosen to be a tourist there.

I spent a lot of time there during two years as a consultant for Syncrude.

The weather is amazingly cold in the winter; 40 below C equals 40 below F, I discovered. On any scale, it's COLD! Cold enough to pop a lung, I discovered. One day it was 60 below, before the wind chill.

The equipment at Syncrude boggles the mind... drag lines, bucket wheels, REALLY BIG trucks. Several tall people could easily sit inside the tire opening pictured above.

Ice fog is rather interesting.

Betting on the day the ice will break on the river was a spring pasttime. Seeing the ice explode as it breaks up is a not-to-be-forgotten event.

Coming face to face with a moose in the road is humbling.

In the (short) summer, there are big mosquitoes.

The Northern Lights inspire awe.

The best thing about Fort McMurray-- remarkably warm, friendly people, all with a frontier spirit and a sense of adventure.

Kind of a drag...

A really really really gigantic machine... the boom of this dragline is 110 meters! (350 feet)

Have I mentioned BIG?

The bucket wheels boggled my mind.
