"Once Upon A Time..." Peekskill by ExGuyParis

Peekskill Travel Guide: 8 reviews and 18 photos

My great-great-grandfather, Louis Henry Orleman, was born in Germany in 1841. He left for the United States and joined the US Army. He fought in Gettysburg, toured the post-war South with General Sherman, and then served as an officer during the Indian Wars. Several of his children were born in "Indian Territory."

He then purchased the Peekskill Military Academy and served as Principal. Several of his children worked there as well-- Daisy, his daughter, was the school physician; daughter Lotta was secretary; and son Louis Henry Jr. (my great grandfather) was assistant principal.

This picture shows Colonel Louis Henry Orleman with his family at Peekskill Military Academy. Seated: Lotta, Walter, Katharina, Louis Henry (on his lap is Louis Phillip Orleman, my grandfather), and Lillie. Standing: Katie, Louis Henry Jr., Daisy, Carl, and Violet.

A hand-colored postcard of the Peekskill Military Academy.

Here, my great-great-aunt Daisy poses with the debate team. She became a physician when there were few female doctors. She and her sister both served as physicians during World War I in France.

Sir, Are you positive your family PURCHASED PMA? Or LEASED the property which was the procedure in that era of time. This is for research on PMA. Thank you.

A friend once asked me why I'm interested in historical, I cud only say - I guess it's a parcel of maturing (read:getting old). Am wrong - it's d only way to live the present. Kudos! I love reading ur history, quite interesting. Cheers!

What a fascinating family! You know a good deal about them I think. Sometimes we only become interested in family history when there is no one left to tell the story!
