Murano, which is famous for its glass works was one of my favorite stops in Venice. Its quite streets and narrow canals seemed a world away from the crowds of Venice. I would recommend stopping in and watching a glass blowing demonstration, from any one of the big glass shops. Sure they will try to get you to buy something when they are done with the demonstration, but it is worth the sales pitch. Besides, there is plenty worth buying from the artisans. If you are there for lunch stop by one of the many small restaurants, they serve good seafood, at a slightly reduced price than what you would find in Venice.

This small church was in service when I was on the island, so I didn’t get a chance to see the inside, but I found it to be a perfect fit for the island. It is one of my favorite church exteriors in all of Italy.

Even more than Murano, Burano is a perfect escape from the tourist crowds of Venice. Its brightly colored buildings are a great contrast to the brick of Venice, and make a stroll through this island really enjoyable. If you are into lace, Burano has an abundance of lace shops. Take an afternoon (sunny if possible) to enjoy this island and its small feel.
