The majestic waterways of Venice

by AgentJX - last update: Sep 28, 2002

Many people speak very highly of the city of Venice, they comment on its beauty, its art, its buildings that reflect its rich history, the amazing system of canals, its concentration of churches, or any number of wonderments. Venice truly offers something for everyone, and that is part of why so many people have such fond memories. I have been to Venice twice, and both times found that my favorite activity was just walking around and exploring the side-alleys, peering into all the small shops, and enjoying the incredible views that the city offers in every direction.

Water and Light

One of the best things about Venice is the interaction between the buildings, the water and the light. The same sight can look very different in the misty morning light, the bright afternoon light, and the setting sun, and each type of light can bring out the best of the buildings. In addition the abundance of water allows for the light to sparkle, and can create brilliant reflections of all the buildings. I hope that some of the pictures on this page can capture even a fraction of what the light and water does of the city of Venice.

A perfect metaphor for Venice

The Bridge of Sighs offers a perfect example of the romance, wealth, power, and sorrow of Venice. The Bridge, which connects the Doge’s Palace to the dungons, appears peaceful and very picturesque from the outside. However, to those that crossed the bridge it represented the power and oppression of Venetian elite. Nicknamed “the Bridge of Sighs” because it was rumored that those condemned to the dungeons would sigh as the looked out through its small window on the beauty of Venice for the last time before plunging into the dark dank world of their prison. Walking the streets of Venice it is possible to experience the wealth, beauty, romance, and even the sorrow of Venice.
