Combining Soybeans, East River

East River

South Dakota has 3 different regions. Not offical but they are very distinict.

East River-East of the Missouri River. This is mostly farming and cattle ranching. It is green.
The large cities in this region are Sioux Falls and Aberdeen.
Pierre is the capital of SD. it is close to the center of the state. It is on the east side of the Missouri river. Fort Pierre is on the west side. One is nice, one is not so nice.
Sun Rise -West River

West River

West river-is west of the River but does not include the Black Hills. That is prairies and the Bad Lands. It is biege and brown. There are very few trees and what there are were planted around homesteads.
This is where most of the indian reservations are. Dances with Wolves was filmed here.
This picture was taken on one of the indian resevations on highway 212. You can see for miles and miles.

The Missouri River divides most of the state and the Central/Mountain time zones follow the river most of the way.
Black Hills National Forest

The Black Hills

And then there is the Black Hills. Home to Mt Rushmore, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and the Homestake Gold Mine(which just closed) and mountains and trees. It is dark green because of all the evergreen trees.
Rapid City is the largest city.
This is the Black Hills part of South Dakota
