The Summer Palace is a nice place to visit for a few hours. You could spend a longer time here if you the have time too. It's laid out real nice with ponds, gardens, and lots of cool buildings. There are tours that can take you here but the local bus is somewhat (LOL you can read about our adventure in the transportation tip) easy and cheap too. Although sometimes packed! I've got more pictures of the Summer Palace in my travelogues.

I didn't know if these guys were delivering furniture to the Forbidden City of just stopping for a look? It sure looked out of place to me as 99.9 % of the people in the area were tourists or cameramen taking pictures of local tourists. Maybe just sneeking a peek when the boss isn't around!! None of us has ever done that! Right?? LOL

I visited the Ming Tombs while on the local tour. Either there wasn't much to see or the buildings where closed at the time. But I didn't come away from the Ming Tombs thinking Wow! that was nice. I had heard about the Ming Tombs all of my life so I thought they were going to be a little more exciting. A ticket to the grounds was about US$.10 cents. (Circa 1987) I still have my ticket glued into my journal.

The Massive gate that is along Qianman is very beautiful. As far as I know you can't go inside them but it does look very impressive from the outside! It was built in the 15th century. At one time it was an important area for protecting the inner city.

Even if you don't understand a word of Chinese I highly recommend a night at the Opera! Wonderful costumes, Great Music, and superb acting make for a Great evening! All for the US$.26 cent admission price. (Circa 1987) I'm sure the price has increased since I was there!

The Temple of Heaven was one of my favorite sights that I visited in Beijing! The park that it's set in is a great place to relax or go for a walk and maybe meet some locals. The original building was built in 1530. Look under the ceiling when you go inside. It is really beautiful. For some reason I didn't take a photo of it. I wish I had.

bike_packer Fri Feb 17, 2006 15:06 UTC hey scott. i agree that touring with a bicycle would definitely give a lot opportunity to explore the off-beaten places. more power to pedal tourists! | raoul71 Tue Feb 7, 2006 16:24 UTC bicycles sit at the lowest level of survivability in Beijing's scale. So, if you don't mind: the pollution, the creaziest and most chaotic traffic I've ever seen (and I'm Italian), the fact that you'd easily be knocked down everywhere, yes, rent a bike! | Wann Sat Jul 9, 2005 10:25 UTC I want to go to Beijing !!! Great page !! Thanks for sharing ! | hundwalder Sat Jun 18, 2005 01:48 UTC Excellent Beijing pages. Loved the one about the wishing well controntation. |
