When I first got off the train I was looking for a hotel that I had noticed in the Lonely Planet guide that sounded quit cheap. But when I got there the cheapest rooms that I could muster where over $20 per night and on my budget I would have rather slept in the hedges!!! LOL So after wasting 30 minutes trying to get a cheap room there I figured I'd try the Youth Hostel on Shamian Island. The next trip was to figure out how to get there as it seemed like quite a distance from the Railway station. I found another Hong Konger that spoke English and asked if you could ask someone which bus went to Shamian Island and I actually ended up with good instructions and got myself and my backpack onto a local bus for the cross town ride for just pennies. I felt lucky as the youth hostel had beds available in the dorm for 8 FEC (US$4.35). I stayed for 3 nights here..(again remember this is 1987)
