Rough Seas and other Long Island, AK Warning Or Danger Tips

Getting to Long Island can be a rough dangerous ride....We went in a 17 foot open skiff. We had some pretty good size waves out in the Gulf of Alaska where the wind was blowing a strong Cold Northwest but as soon as we entered the protection of Cook Bay we were out of the wind and the waves weren't spraying water on us anymore! That sure felt good to get out of the freezing water!! Also if you are going to be taking a skiff to Long Island make sure the person is familiar with the area as there are some unmarked rocks that are only a couple of feet under the water right out in the boating lane!! My friend showed me where they were located...it sure surprised me to see them.
Here you can see our skiff relaxing in the calm waters of Cook Bay. The photo may look like it's a warm day...but believe me..it wasn't !!! My friend was driving the skiff with his fingers balled up inside his gloves!! And our faces were frozen from the freezing sea water that was splashing us in the face!!

One thing for sure is that I don't think you will want to do is drink any water that you find on the island...The US military is famous for leaving behind barrels of chemicals that eventualy break and leak into the ground...I've been told that the island is going eventually going to be "Cleaned Up" as part of the Super Fund that was established a few years ago....personally I wouldn't like to see all of the old quonset huts torn down and the bunkers removed....but I guess if they want to do some soil and water testing to make sure the area is safe to for humans and animals to spend some time that would be good. As there is quite a large Rabbit and Sitka Black Tail Deer population on the island.

There are hand painted numbers on many of the buildings in the area. They are coded so they can be demolished by the Army Corp of Engineers ( I think ). I hope they leave some of the buildings as they are certainly part of American History.

If you find bunkers with gates over them then could hold some hidden dangers....That is why there are wooden gates in front of some of them...So beware!! Not that the wooden gate is going to hold anyone out...
