Things To Do: Inside the Quonset Huts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Here you see my buddy checking out some of the remaining windows that have survived the vandals over the years. Also notice the lushness of the green moss that has covered everything.

Things To Do: Inside the huts......
  • Tip Rating:
  • When the military pulled out it seems like they just took the essentials out of the buildings as the electrical wiring , light sockets hot water heaters and other stuff that was nailed down is still seen inside.

Things To Do: Spruce Island in the background
  • Tip Rating:
  • Here you can see our intended destination of the day Spruce Island (in the very back of the photo). It is hard to see just how rough the seas are in the photo...but believe me when you are out there in a 17 foot skiff you can feel the power of the sea!!

    Things To Do: Castle Bluff
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are some beautiful views out over Castle Bluff. And I guess there is a Stellar Sea Lion Rookery here also but there weren't any to be seen on my visit. You can guess why it's called Castle Bluff as the rocks give the appearance of a castle.

Things To Do: SCR-296A Antenna Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the metal tower that housed the SCR-296A (700 MHz) radar that was used during World War II. The Radar equipment is long gone except for the antenna. The tower is very shaky when you get on the top as told to me by people that have climbed up it. I didn't try climbing up it as I would have to be half-monkey to do it anymore!! haha I'm sure the views from the top are great. If you want to attempt the climb you will have to climb the first 20 feet without the help of a ladder though.

Things To Do: 6 Inch Guns......
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a shot of one of the two 6-inch M1903A2 guns on Deer Point. They had a maximun range of 27,100 yards!! The were supplied with 1300 type AP projectiles and 700 type HE 90 pound projectiles!! It sure must've been loud when they were firing them. I don't think they were ever fired at an enemy target though.
Sorry for the quality of the photos...I made the mistake of having the sun backlighting the gun...I won't let it happen again..And sadly it was the only photo I made of the guns.

    Things To Do: Castle Bluff
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is called Castle Bluff. It overlooks the Castle Rocks. There are some bunkers that are "hidden". If you enlarge the photos you can spot them. You don't want to be a sleep walker if you set you tent up near on the bluff...that first step off the edge would be a doozy!!

What more could you want? Ghosts, Old guns, Old Quonset Huts, Beautiful Vera Bay and Castle Bluff. I love the photo of the window. Very unique pages. I really enjoyed them.

As usual a great and very interesting page Scott.I enjoyed very much to learn a little bit more of your adventure at Long Island. The other day in Barcelona's Castle I saw a few guns very similar at the one in your photo.
