Tent at the Portage on the Karluk River and other Kodiak Island, AK Hotel/Accommodation Reviews

Sleeping in Tent at the Portage on the Karluk River can be very exciting!!! As there are lots of Kodiak Brown Bears walking around!!! So You MUST keep a clean camp!! One night when we were just starting to sleep a Bear came right up to our tent and Woofed it!!!! He was smelling the tent and you could hear his nostrils breathing!!! Talk about getting the heart pumping!!!! Either it will get your heart pumping or kill you!!! LOL My adrenilin was pumping so hard that I could hardly sleep the rest of the night!!! But the bears aren't blood thirsty animals walking around trying to kill people!! But they are animals and can be unpredictable!!

Unique Qualities: There may be fees for camping at the Portage! Most of the land in the area is owned by the Natives of Kodiak Coorportation. And the rules are always changing so please get current information before heading to the Portage!! The King Salmon fishing in June is Awesome!!!!!!!!

This group of tents were brought in by a group from France! They quite often spend a couple of weeks at the Portage!! So they like to live in style!! I think they brought cases and cases of French wine too!
