  • Favorite Thing: Walk the docks of Kodiak and chat with local fisherman. Many of them have fishing stories that they are willing to share.

Fondest Memory: Many of the King Crab fisherman or women fish in the Bering Sea during the roughest time of the year! 50 Foot seas are common!!

General Tips: Check out the Stellar Sea Lions
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Kodiak has a good sized resident population of Stellar Sea Lions. The males are huge. There are a few good spots to guarantee seeing them. Go to the St Herman Boat Harbor (also called Dog Bay) and go to the last finger of the dock and walk all the way to the end. You can see them hanging out on their own dock that the city has put in. Sometimes you can see them very close as they swim around.

    General Tips: St Hermans Harbor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: St Hermans Harbor is a nice place to wander around and look at the fishing boats. You can also talk to the local fisherman about their way of life or find out what issues are concerning them. Many times there will be Stellar Sea Lions swimming here too.

    General Tips: Reflections
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: In the morning before the wind starts to blow there are nice reflections in the ocean, lakes and ponds on Kodiak Island. It is a real quite time of day before most people are up and making noise!

  • Favorite Thing: Most of the trees on the North-East part of Kodiak are Spruce trees. On the Southern end of the island there are only scrub Alder trees! But don't try hiking through those without a trail! You'll never make any ground at all!

    General Tips: Wintery Streams
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: There are some great photo opportunities to be had around Kodiak I love the Fall when the first frosts come and everything is so crispy. It can be cold on the fingers though. And the camera lense can fog up going from the cold air to the warm car.

General Tips: Information about the Refuge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kodiak Island - Information Booth at the Refuge Headquarters

  • Favorite Thing: The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is a huge area! About 2/3 of Kodiak Island is inside the refuge. There are public use cabins available. Lot's of wildlife viewing! Fishing and Hunting. It is not an easy place to get too though. You must fly in or take a boat from the city of Kodiak. If you are on a small budget don't even consider it although getting into the refuge can be done cheaply with some great planning. But you should be an accomplished back country hiker with experience in Bear Country!
Oddly enough there are only 6 Animals native to Kodiak Island and they are Kodiak Brown Bear, red fox, river otter, short-tailed weasel, little brown bat, and tundra vole . All of the others have been introduced my man!
To get detailed infomation you should contact the refuge directly.
