Hiking the backcountry or even just hiking the local hills can be a very fun activity! In the summer months you will want to get up to the high country if hiking away from established trails as the undergrowth is very thick! The grass is 5 feet tall and many salmon berry bushes and the Alder trees make for an almost impassible low country! I have hiked through the stuff so I know it can hours just to go 1 mile if there isn't a trail. But once you make it up to higher elevations the hiking is fabulous! There are maps available locally that would be of great help if you want to do any backcountry hiking.

Equipment: Good Sturdy Waterproof Hiking shoes that are already broke in! All of your equipment should be waterproof!

Bear Valley Golf Course is a great Par 36 golf course! The setting is magnificent and some of the hazards you may run into include the Kodiak Brown Bear, Sitka Black Tailed Deer and the ever present Fox!

Equipment: There are equipment rentals. There is a practice green and driving range.

It is located across the bridge on Near Island. There are a series of trails that are nice for leisurely strolls. Some of the trails go down to the beach others go through a spuce forest. You will see other families on these trails. There are benches for resting along the way too.

If you would like to practice your archery while you visit Kodiak you might want to check out the local archery club. It is located at the VFW Post out of town.

Equipment: You might have to bring your own. But I bet if you meet up with some of the local guys they could lend you some equipment.

My son found this King Size Hockey Stick at the beach during a snow storm. All kidding aside there are lakes and ponds to play hockey on in the winter time. As of right now there are not any leagues though.

Most of the beaches in Kodiak offer some sort of fishing opportunities. Whether it be Salmon, Dolly Varden Trout or one of the many varieties of Rock Fish. Kids can have a great time catching fish.
