Kalsin Mountains - Kalsin Island

Kalsin Mountains

Bring Binoculars for the Mouintain Goats

If you are lucky you may spot one of the many Mountain Goats that reside in the mountains above Kalsin Bay. They will very hard to spot and a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope will be needed to observe them with any detail from the road! If you want to see them up close there are several trails that lead up to the mountain tops and these will NOT be easy hiking trails!! Be prepared for some of the hardest hiking you will ever do!! Steep terrain, Thick Alder, grass, pushkie, devils club and ferns will be trying to slow you down and even stop you until you get to the higher levels of the mountain!!! Where sturdy boots and bring water and snacks for this hike!! You'll need it!!

Salmon Ditch - Kalsin Island

Salmon Ditch

The Salmon run in the ditch!!

As you get close to the Olds River after passing the very long curve past The Kasin Bay Inn look to your left into the ditch. You will see Pink Salmon that have run up this very tiny slough. The flowing water eventually stops so it is amazing that the salmon return to this same spot year after year!! You can only see this in Late July through mid Septmber but it is very interesting to see. I've been here when we haven't had much rain and the fish are just flopping in the moist weeds with hardly any water at all to support them. The Pink Salmon actually are spawning right there so they have a healthy return each year of several hundred salmon. Sometimes if you are there in the early morning you can see fox trying to catch the easy prey!!

Y - Kalsin Island

Y

Turn at the "Y"

In a few of my tips here I have mentioned taking a turn at the Y. I thought I'd explain what the Y is. All of the locals call the intersection of the Chiniak Highway and the Pasagshak Highway the Y. Basically if you're coming from the town of Kodiak you will come to this intersection at mile 30.1. You will have to make the big decision of Right turn for Pasagshak State Recreation Site, Fossil Beach and the Rocket Launch Facility. Or Left for Kalsin Pond, Roslyn Beach, and the Village of Chiniak.

Silver Salmon Culvert - Kalsin Island

Silver Salmon Culvert

The Culvert

This is the Culvert that all of the fish that go to the Kalsin Pond will pass through from the Olds River. It is amazing to see the Powerful Silver Salmon making their way through the culvert to return to their birthplace to spawn and keep the cycle of life alive!! Then a couple weeks later they will die and become part of the ecosystem. They can only reach the culvert during high tide.

Kalsin Hill - Kalsin Island

Kalsin Hill

The road is cut away

If you enlarge the photo or look very close you will see the gray rock in the center of the photo is where the road comes down Kalsin Hill. A few years back the road was widened by using large amounts of dynamite!!

Golden Morning - Kalsin Island

Golden Morning

Golden Ground Fog

On the morning that I took this there was just the right amount of ground fog to add Mother Natures special effects!!! This field that is shown is usually full of grazing cows and horses but they were on the other side of the road on this morning. You can see the start of the Marin Mountain Range in the background.
