Ek Balam - Black Jaguar

by shdw100 - last update: Oct 3, 2003

Ek Balam is Mayan for 'Black Jaguar', which in itself is a powerful name. This site is probably one of the longest inhabited Mayan sites. Whereas many other cities in the Yucatan had a life span of five or six hundred years, Ek Balam was alive and kicking for about 1000 years.
Located about 20 minutes north of Valladolid and 10 minutes south of Tizimin, it's a little off the beaten path for a Mayan site. But if you are into Mayan architecture and art, this site is not to be missed!
There is no formal guided tour, although we hooked up with a local boy of about 14 who took us around. He was excellent for information concerning the site! He only speaks Spanish though.
