Executive Resort at Kananaskis

Unremarkable, but pleasant. A little bit more intimate than the Delta, and therefore I scored it higher. The hotel whirlpool is quite small for a larger hotel, and we didn't have a chance to use it as it was always occupied (it only holds 8 people) ; there is no pool. The hotel was renovated in 2000, and the rooms have nice decor. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Unique Qualities: The nice thing about the rooms is that they have a mini-fridge, to keep cold drinks on hand instead of having to buy overpriced stuff from the vending machines. They have also installed soaker tubs, which sort of makes up for the fact that the hot tub is so small. Most rooms have balconies. Have good deals during the week in off-season.

Delta Lodge at Kananaskis

We stayed here about 5 years ago, and was disappointed. Delta had recently purchased the hotel from the defunct CP Rail luxury hotel chain and had let the hotel plus the legendary CP hospitality and service run downhill. Well, that has changed. On a recent stay we were very impressed; the service was impeccable and Delta is really trying hard to polish this hotel into a jewel.

We stayed in the Signature Suites -- an upgraded wing of the hotel, and this is the place to book in the summer as the rest of the hotel has no air conditioning. With the steamy summer we have had and predicted global warming to come, air conditioning has sadly become essential in our neck of the woods. With a Signature Suite, you get a substantial continental breakfast that is worth probably $14.00 per person (judging from the hotel menu) plus appetizers in the evening. The decor was slightly bland, but no scratchy print bedspreads! (my pet peeve). The bed was instead triple-sheeted with a down duvet and it was extremely comfy. My only complaint was the highly perfumed toiletries in the bathroom; I ended up being allergic to the body lotion.

Unique Qualities: Has a few restaurants -- one extremely high-end that we saw was yawningly empty, a bistro (which will be remodeled soon), a deli with great sandwiches, plus a upscale casual dining room. Service is good, and the Sunday brunch is quite popular with people from Calgary. There is a little shopping centre with several stores in the hotel, which you can pick up your souveniers or spiff up your wardrobe at. The hotel also has a full-service spa which I haven't tried yet.

Address: Kananaskis Village

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Head west along Highway 40 25 km from the TransCanada/Highway 40 turn-off. Turn right at the Kananaskis Village signs (intersection will be marked). Turn left onto the Ribbon Creek Road, and continue until you reach the village.

HI Kananaskis Wilderness Hostel

The buillding doesn't look like much from the outside, but this hostel is quite homey -- you are asked to take your shoes off before you enter and the hostel, and the first thing you notice is that it is extremely clean. Private rooms have sinks, and there is an attractive lounge with comfortable sofas, plenty of board games, books, and a wood-burning fireplace. Also, it has an outdoor firepit with free firewood available and benches all around for socializing and roasting marshmallows..

Unique Qualities: The most affordable accommodation in the area next to camping. Lots of hiking and biking trails close by, and if you get tired of your own cooking, you can head off to Kananaskis Village where you can eat at one of the hotels. Rates are also cheaper during the week. You may want to book ahead, especially in winter, as this hostel is very popular with skiers. If cross country is your thing, the popular Ribbon Creek trail practically starts at the front door.

Address: Ribbon Creek

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Head south on Highway 40 from the Transcanada highway for 25 km, then turn right at the Nakiska Ski Hill Access Road. Cross the Kananaskis River, and follow the signs to Ribbon Creek. The hostel is located just before the trailhead parking lot.

Highwood River Inn

I haven't actually stayed here, but I would have no reservations about doing so. On a whim one day, we were driving by and stopped to see what they had to offer.

The proprieter was very friendly and hospitable when showing us around. The rooms are quaint with nice decor and have private bathrooms with shower (no tub). There is a lounge downstairs, reminiscent of your mom and dad's rec room, but hey, it's homey. Each room is individually decorated.

Unique Qualities: They have a big screen tv with videos to watch in a tiny theatre complete with antique theatre seats. Meals are offered in a charming dining room decorated with a hand-painted mural.

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: Call below for directions or go to their website. They are located not too far from Longview.

Mount Engadine Lodge

The lodge is under new management, but I have heard from friends that they had no complaints when they were staying there under them. All meals are included in the rate: buffet breakfast, a sandwich buffet where you create your own brown bag lunch ( fruit, trail mix and goodies included), and a sit-down dinner with European cuisine.

The lodge has a common room with a piano and library. We heard tv coming from the staff area into the night, but strangely, this is not offered to the guests. But, you're there to get away from it all, right? Make sure you book one of the spacious deluxe suites, which are done up tastefully, and have a gas fireplace that runs on a thermostat. Nice to wake up to a fire on a frosty, chilly morning. With the deluxe suite, you get your own deck; lovely for watching the myriads of stars at night. There is only the office phone that you can use, but otherwise there is no phone service. The showers can be a bit cramped for anyone over 5'10''.

Address: Kananaskis

Comparison: less expensive than average

Directions: From Calgary, follow Highway 40 until you reach the Smith Dorrien Trail turnoff. Follow the Smith Dorrien (which is a well-maintained gravel road) for approx 30 min. to the Mount Shark Road (you will see a sign for the Lodge). Turn Left.
