Obidos is reminiscent of centuries past, with views of its cluster of whitewashed houses still encircled by its imposing walls nestled on top of a sloped hill. Its interior is criss-crossed by ancient streets and alleys, which, together with its Moorish castle and its numerous monuments, make Obidos such a unique and beautiful town.
Its whitewashed houses with yellow or blue stripes, show distinctly the marks of its medieval past, such as stone doors and window frames, and at each stride, picturesque corners appear full of ancient flavours. Everywhere, churches, austere facades, "Manuelino" windows and historical landmarks, complement the many-coloured flowers and vines which give life to this area of past kings.
From the top of its walls wonderful scenery can be admired. To the west lies the beautiful Várzea da Rainha, to the east a magnificent view stretches over the valley of the river Arnoia. |
