Damn, What's That in the Air??

by Johnny_CA - last update: Dec 11, 2002

We were in Bangkok in the muggy month of June. When we were not pampered in an air-conditioned van, we walked around Bangkok and noticed that everyone branded face masks, scooter drivers and passengers and the traffic cops and white gloves! We immediately knew why cause the air was unbearable!! It was suffocating and I think the intense heat added to the dread of the city air. Bangkok is a very busy city, people, scooter, cars, pedestrians all on the move, every hour of the day! Coming from a big city, we were not the least bit charmed with this metropolis. We could have stayed in LA and choked on the polluted air! It was when we left Bangkok for Chiang Mai that we began to appreciate the beauty of this country. Don't get me wrong, Bangkok is worth visiting, nightlife, the Red Light area, the Thai massages where they grind the hell out you and terrific food!! And all this for very cheap! I think it helped too that the Thai women were beautiful and all nicely tanned from the warm sun and the hospitable greeting of the clapsed hands right in front of their nose gesture. Our friend's Hyatt colleague was the greatest, setting up tours for us and taking us shopping. I think that friendliness and generosity are ingrained in the Thai people!
