I really liked this poem of Neruda - compared to the rest of his works, I wonders if he wrote it! My Spanish is not good enough to understand him and translated he is gibberish - except for this one gem.

Nice tips on South America. Of the authors you mention I've only read Gabriel Garcia Marquez - I must try to check out the others before or when I go. We're planning to spend a year travelling all over South America.
