First of all, what everybody must see is the Dam square, where you can admire the architectural beauty of the old palace. Going souther you can also pass through the Leidseplein, where several caffees are to be found. For a more interesting approach, near the Leidseplein you can visit the three most important museums:
The Rijksmuseum, The Van Gogh's Museum , the Stedelijk museum, and the Rembrandt's house.
There are several other museums to visit, such the Ann Frank museum, which last year I had the chance to visit and many others.
Afterwards, you cal also get on a tram and go to the Amsterdam Zoo (Zoological garden), one of the best in Europe.
If you would like to shop something cheap, go visit the Waterlooplein, where you can buy everything at a very low price, it's an open market.
Ten slotte, after a tiring day, why not just take a sweet walk in the Vondelpark, south from the centre.
Van Gogh museum: no need to say many things. Lots of paintings from Van Gogh, with lots of explanations, and of course with several guides always willing to help you.
Rijksmuseum: HUGE but in order to get a quicker view and be a bit prepared, go visit the site (.nl) from this museum and take the virtual tour. It's very detailed.
