Getting TO/AROUND: Coming from Spain and 8 days in Ibiza, I was scared that I might not be able to read English, much less Greek. But, it turned out that the Athens airport is very simple. It is basically one big terminal, so you don't have to run all over th place looking for baggae, counters or anything; its all real close. All arrivals are located on the bottom floor, where luggage claim is, and all departures are on the second. To calm your nerves, everything is written in English, as well as Greek. To get to the city, its a 30 minute or more bus ride, or, I'm sure, a shorter taxi ride.

I took the bus from the airport, so check out the next tip for information on the bus schedules.

    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: There are 3 bus lines connecting the airport to various important points. Despite your destination, if you are using a bus to go, you need to exit out of doors 4 and 5 in the main terminal building. Look on the ground for a big sign that says "BUS". Not that hard right?

    Major Destinations:*

    Ethniki Amina Metro
Line E94 This metro stop is where there is a connection between the metro travel and airport bus travel. Beware that the metro stops running at midnight, and that the bus stops before that.

    Syntagma Square:
Line E 95 From the city center at Syntagma Square and Parliment, this bus makes stops at Sofias Avenue, Mesogion Avenue and Attiki Odos befoer terminating at the airport.

Buses 24 hours, about every twenty minutes but every 40 minutes after midnight.

    Pireaus
Line E96 Coming from Pireaus' main square, this bus makes stops at Posidonos Avenue, Varis-Varkizas, and Varis-Koropiou Roads before ending up at the airport.

Buses 24 hours, about every twenty minutes but every 40 minutes after midnight.

    Kiffissou Street Bus Terminal
Bus E93 connects the airport with the bus terminal at Kiffissou street. Buses run about every 35 minutes (65 at night)

E94-E95-E96 tickets cost 2.90 Euro and is valid for 24 hours on all public transport.

Getting TO/AROUND: For my journey north to Olympus, I had to catch a train from the Larissa Station. This actually turned out to be much easier than I had anticipated.

Larissa, the metro stop, is on metro line 2.
The exit puts you very near to the train station (only a very short walk). An interesting memory I had while taking a coffe at the attached restaurant at Larissa, was the graffitte located across the road on or near a basketball court. It SO much reminded me of Chicago. See if it reminds you of somewhere else!

Getting TO/AROUND: I cant express how much trouble I had finding this place on foot. I was going on my day trip to Delphi, and that is where buses from Athens depart from. I decided to walk from the nearest metro stop, which may or may not be Larissa. But, that is where I started from. It is located on at 260 Liossion St.

    Buses to Delphi leave at:
    07.30, 10.30, 13.00, 15.30, 17.30 and 20.00

Returning from Delfi at 05.30 (except Sunday), 07.30 (only Sunday), 09.00 (except Sunday), 11.00, 13.30, 16.00 and 18.00.

One-way fare costs 10.50 Euro and it takes about 3 hours for the trip. There is a scheduled stop for food and W/C. Or, if you ahve the same elderly lady I had on my trip, there will be a random stop along side the road so she can relieve herself in full view of traffic. Lovely.

Getting TO/AROUND: With all of the ferry travel happening in Greece, I would be remiss without mentioning how to get to Piraeus. Piraeus is the main port of Greece and is located south of the city, but is easily reached by the metero.

Line 1 of Athens metro terminates (if you are going the right direction) at the port of Piraeus.

If you are on line 3, you connect at Monastiraki. If you are on line 2 you can connect to line 1 at Omonia or Attiki.

Getting TO/AROUND: Let me say that I might be a little bitter about this tip. When I was there, it seemd as though the entire network was under construction. At various points you had to pass up your stop and proceed to the next one. Where you would then have to get on the same line in reverse for one stop to arrive at your desired location. That is a hassle that I can understand, seeing that they are trying to improve the system before the Olympics hits. But, when you change which stations are closed!!! Oh man!! Let me tell you how pissed I was in Athens metro!

Well, I better not; VT has rules about assassination attempts on major city metro planners. Small city metro planners are alright, but not Athens'.

Anyway, Athens metro is supposed to have 3 lines.

Line 1 runs from Piraeus to Kifissia,
Line 2 from Dafni to Sepolia,
Line 3 from Ethniki Amyna to Monastiraki in Plaka.

Intersections of the lines occur in a small triangle in the center around Plaka and neighboring areas. Monastiraki, Omonia, Syntagma are these main intersections.

    Single ticket - EUR 0.70
    Single 1-2 zones on Line 1 - EUR 0.60
    Day Pass EUR 2.90
    Monthly Pass EUR 35.00

    Hours:
    Line 1 / 5:00 - 0:30
    Line 2 and 3 / 5:30 - 24:00

Hi, could I asked you how one is able to get bus tickets to Delphi from Athens in advance, whether there are any websites for booking? Thank you.
