My trip to the Oracle!

Delphi was the one of the most important towns in Ancient Greece, because it contained the oracle of Apollo’s Temple. All people trusted the wisdom of the oracle and came from miles away to seek its advice. The sought help for: the best time to plant, so as to produce the best fall harvest, whether or not to go to war, etc. The myth of the oracle is associated with great fissures in the earth, gaseous vapors and intoxicating waters, basically everyone was drugged (I think), and thats why they heard the voices. I being humorous, of course. The Pythia, who delivered the fortune, was one of the women of Delphi and spent her entire life dedicated to Apollo’s Temple. The ruins at Delphi include theaters, smaller temples, treasure rooms, homes for the priests of Apollo, and at the top of the hill, an Olympic-type track that is in real good condition. The entire town is set directly on liemstone cliff faces and provdies a breathtaking view of the adjacent valley below. It’s easy to see why the ancient Greeks that this to be the center of the Earth.

Nice to relive my visit to Delphi through your beautiful photos--just as you said, I heard that the oracle was in a drug induced trance from gases below the ground. Nice travel page!

I visited Delphi twice until now and think it is an impressive place. Would be even more interesting if there still were these priestesses propheting the future ... well, one can dream :-) good tips and great pictures!

Fantastic work on presentation of Delphi, especially the mythological background info (which is right on target) You do have to be in shape to make it to the top.. I made it. Superior photographs which help to rekindle my memories of this special place.
