Getting TO/AROUND: Located about 30 minutes away from the city center, Fiumicino is the major international airport hub of Rome. Basically, you can get anywhere and come from anywhere when traveling from or to this airport. FCO was only built in 1961. Up until that point Ciampino, the other and still functioning airport of Rome, was the city's principal airport. Now, Ciampino has been relagated to mainly domestic and a few international flights.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you arrive at Fiumicino Airport (which most international flights do), then you will need to hop on the Fiumicino Express train, unless you want to pay about 60 Euro for a cab. It is a direct train to Roma Termini. It takes about 30 minutes to arrive, and it stops at a few stations along the way. It costs 9.50 Euro, one way. From Termini to the Airport: The “Leonardo Express” leaves every 30 minutes, from 05.52 to 22.52. From the Airport to Termini The “Leonardo Express” leaves from the Fiumicino Airport every 30 minutes, from 06.37 to 23.37.

Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Ok, being that I was a backpacker, I used the public transport in every city I traveled. I can say, for sure, that Rome's Metro is not the worst (that belonged to Athens and its 30 stations under construction debacle). But, Rome is definitely second worst. It was the dirtiest, grungiest, over-crowded version of a subway I encountered. Plus, when I was there the first time (in the summer heat of Augusto), it was so hot that I lost millions of brain cells from the trip. OK, OK, it was probably the pub crawls, but it WAS hot! They did get me where I wanted to go each and every time, which is the main thing, but the system could use an overhaul.

Getting TO/AROUND: Initially, I took taxis to get around Rome, just because I wasn't brave enough yet, this being the first stop on my trip, and first time overseas. Boy did I learn quickly. you want to avoid taxis in Rome at all cost. And I do mean cost. They are so much more expensive than public transport, that they should only be used if you are in an extreme hurry, or if you have loads of luggage. Otherwise, the public transport might not look the best, but it always get you there eventually. Additionally, as in all major tourist spots, they can and will try to rip you off by charging you extra baggage fees, the wrong fares, etc. etc. Just be aware.
