  • If you have nerves of steel and reflexes like a cat, then you should fell quite at home on the roads of Rome. However, if you are anything other than a professional Formula One or bumper car driver, then you should avoid driving in Rome like the plague. You need a special permit to drive in the historical center, though they don't bother tourists too much. However, the 1000 oblivious, aggressive Vespa drivers, as well as, the oblivious agressive car drivers should deter you from even attempting. Rome is very walkable and the limited Metro can at least put you near most sights. Also, getting lost amongst the narrow streets and finding all the little shops and places to eat is half the fun.

  • There is absolutely no way that you will be able to see Rome and all its sight and NOT be confronted by some type of seller or con artist. They line the streets and alleyways to all of the sights. Most are fine and are just trying to sell you knock-offs of designer sunglasses, purses, and belts. They are truly harmless, and just trying to make a living... however illegal it is. Most of these guys are illegal immigrants that are trying to feed themselves and their families from the profits they make here, so don't get angry at them. If you don't want to buy, simply don't make eye contact, and if they approach you, just say "No Thanks."

Remember, it does the world no good to argue or be angry at these people.

  • All around town you will see elderly women in darkly colored clothes with mysterious limps. Whether or not they are faking, I don't know. But, once again, these people normally are of no harm to you. If yuo chose to drop some change in their hats. If not, don't bother them, because just their presence should not bother you.

    Train Stations: Termini

  • Out of all the places in Rome, I felt the "least safe" at Termini. Everyone knows that tourists who fly into Fiumicino invariably come through Termini if they don't go by taxi. In a thiefs eyes, that means that Termini is the prime place to swindle or pickpocket unsuspecting tourist. Note that I said unsuspecting. Despite the feel that I got from the place, or more to the point, BECAUSE I felt that way in Termini, I paid so much more attention than normal to other around me. Its as simple as that. Always be on the lookout, never leave your bags, and keep valuables out of sight. Follow these rules and the chances of something happening are slim to none.

It also helps to put a scowl on your face and act crazy... :-)

Less than a hundred Euro for a black pinstripe suit. I'm impressed. But, what's with the Starbuck's in your hand at Feltrinelli?!
