Riviera di Barcalo MIRAMARE Castle Review

Though I drove to the Miramare Castle, bypassing much of this area, the Riviera di Barcalo is the place where the Trieste regattas take place and is a beautiful promenade along the sea. This riviera ends at the Miramare Castle.

Miramare Castle Information MIRAMARE Castle Review

Built from 1856-1860, the castle was destined to be the home of the Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. As you stroll through the castle, you are transported back to the mid-1800's as all of the original furniture, even including the piano the archduke played, are still in pristine condition. With views out of the windows that are second to none, one wonders why anyone would ever want to leave, which the archduke did to become the Emperor of Mexico.

Tours of the castle are possiblefrom 9 - 19 every day, though the ticket office closes at 18.30.

Entrance is 4 Euro, with discounts for various EU groups, senior citizens and children.

Miramare's Gardens MIRAMARE Castle Review

I think the most best part of the entire trip to Miramare is the gardens surrounding the castle, not the castle itself. Don't get me wrong, the castle is wonderful, but the gardens are truly exquisite. Nice trails winding underneath the shade of the trees and stunning flowers line the entire walk. Don't rush through just to see the castle, take your time outside it!

Miramare Castle MIRAMARE Castle Review

Perched on a cliff just a short ride from the center of Trieste is Miramare Castle. It is set on beautiful grounds and the gardens are really spectacular in summer. Initially, the entire area was bare rock, but at the behest of the Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, for whom the castle was built, lush vegetation was brought in, and the result today are the amazing gardens through which you can take a stroll.

Piazza at Night Piazza Unità d'Italia Review

My favorite memory of Trieste, that doesn't have to do with Banjo and friends, was being in Piazza Unita d'Italia at night. At the waters edge of the piazza are posts with blue lights that make the piazza as beautiful as any I've been in.

Also along the ground are little blue lights that run the length of the square, making you hope that airplanes don't mistake it for a runway!

Foutain of the Four Continents Piazza Unità d'Italia Review

Located in the Piazza Unita d'Italia is a large fountain. IT is a beautiful work of art that really enhances the entire square. It is best viewed at night as the lighting is really excellent, though pictures of it don't come out so well....

It is known in Italian as: "Fontana dei Quattro
Continenti".

Piazza Unita d'Italia is the in the record book for being the largest piazza in all of Europe. The fact that it opens up to the sea only enhances its beauty. The buildings surrounding it house the political officials of the city, and are works of art themselves. Unless it is a festival, the piazza is always swept clean be the wind that comes in off the water. Truly one of the most beautiful piazza's in Italy.
