Budapest will always remain a very special place for me because it was the very first foreign city that I ever visited back in 1987. I still remember some things from that trip, although the recent memories from the city have taken over many of the old ones.
The history of Budapest starts on the Buda side when Celts settled on Gellert Hill well before the birth of Christ. This beautiful city that today has about 1.8 million people was born in 1873 when Buda, Obuda (Ancient Buda) and Pest were officially joined.
Buda and Pest, even today, still create an interesting contrast. Hilly Buda is situated in the west, with its narrow cobbled streets and mixture of medieval and neo-classical buildings, while the flat Pest lies to the east, with its wide boulevards and Art Deco styles.

Great start on Budapest! I also thought about going there someday, as the architecture always looks great on the pictures from Budapest. And your photo on the main page is really lovely!
