Kutna Hora is a medium-size provincial town around 70km east of Prague. At one time in the history it was the second most important Bohemian town after Prague.
Kutna Hora was established in the 13th century when large amounts of silver ore were discovered. Soon after a mint was founded, many grand houses built and churches constructed. In less than 150 years Kutna Hora became one of Europe's largest and richest towns. Note that it was then bigger than London, for example!!
The good times came to an end in the 16th century when the silver was worked out. The town shrank to a third of its former size and many buildings were burned down during the big fire in 1770.
Today Kutna Hora is nothing compared to its wealth and fame in the old times, but it is still a beautiful town with many fascinating thigs to see. It is a perfect place to visit for a day together with the Sedlec's Ossuary.
