WELCOME TO TSITSIKAMMA | Many hikes start from here.. |
*************************************************************************************************************************************************** When I first started to plan my trip through South Africa and read about Tsitsikamma, I knew it was a place for me. It is a heaven for those who love the ocean, long walks and/or hikes, campling and nature.
Let me now tell you more about this magnificent place, so if you desire a visit, you would know what is waiting for you..
* It is situated in the Southern Cape, on the Garden Route. It is 615km from Cape Town, 195km from Port Elizabeth, and 68km from Plettenberg Bay.
* It was designated in 1964; it extends along a coastline of around 70km and streches seawards for some five kilometers.
* The word "Tsitsikamma" comes from the Hottentot words of 'tse-tsesa' (meaning clear) and ' gami' (meaning water). It is possible that the name refers to the clear water in the Tsitsikamma River.
************************************************************************************************************************************************ |
| | * Two of the South Africa's most popular hikes lie in Tsitsikamma - Otter Trail (41km or 25 miles) and Tsitsikamma Trail (60 km or 37 miles). Otter Trail was South Africa's first official trail and it stretches from the mouth of the Storm's River to the beach of Natur's Valley.
* The park is open from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm for day visitors, but you can also arrange an overnight stay (a variety of options is available). Entrance fee from adults is around R20. If you plan on going for Otter Trail, you need a permit (book in advance), which will cost you R400. Tsitsikamma Trail will set you back R200.
********************************************************************************* |
How do you like this picture? When I first saw these pocket-like formations, I had to take a closer look to figure out what they were.. After some observing, I came to beleive that these pocket-like formations are creations of spiders -very fascinating! Do keep your eyes open when you hike in Tsitsikamma to witness this, too!
