****************************************************************************************************************************************************** I had long known about the magnificent town of Bamberg, but it wasn't until recently when I was finally able to witness the beauty with my own eyes. Whoever is going to travel close to Bamberg (for example, places in Bayern), I strongly recommend not to miss this lovely town. You only need a day or two from your schedule and you will be left with many fantastic memories.
Bamberg is known as 'the Rome of Germany', however, I hadn't heard that until I went there. And it certainly wasn't the only thing that I hadn't not heard about Bamberg - I felt that in my two-day trip I learned something very interesting in every step.
Bamberg is one of the fortunate German cities that has stayed out of the wars and thus, has been always more or less unscathed. As a result of that, the city is considered a European architectural historical monument and in 1993 was placed under the protection of UNESCO.
Here are some interesting facts about the town that I learned during my visit:
* Bamberg was first mentioned in 902 as a "Castrum Babernberch" in the chronicle of Abt Regino von Prum"
* Bamberg is home to around 70,000 inhabitants and 35,000 cars
* There are 59 bridges in town
* Bamberg is known for its unique beer culture and the town is the home of the famous 'smoked beer' (Rauchbier in German)

| | More than 1,500 buildings in Bamberg Old Town are protected by UNESCO in a area of 250 hectars. This building, as you see, is not standing up straight and the city guide gave us a long explanation of how a house like that was saved from collapsing. It took the city *only* 850,000 euros to do.. So, although old towns with lovely old houses make the town very beautiful, they are paying a very high price for that. |
******************************************************************* A beautiful view of the old houses while crossing a bridge by the Old Town House. While walking in Bamberg, I could not stop looking at all the buildings and their unique styles. When you get a chance to visit Bamberg, just take your time to wonder along the streets and you will understand what I mean. | | |
