Las Vegas is located in the middle of a desert in southern Nevada. But why had anyone wanted to build a city there? Simply because the law of Nevada is much more relaxed when it comes to gambling, alcohol and sex than a lot of other states in the US. This is why at the beginning of the 20th century some gangsters saw their chance to earn a lot of money there.
First they built only casinos which attracted a lot of people form outside Nevada. Most of the casinos are located in big hotels, so the tired gambler can fall into bed and play again after some hours of sleep without loosing a lot of time.
But when the competition between them got stronger they had to find other means to get the visitors into their hotels. So they created theme hotels which are an attraction of their own and they perform world-class shows to entertain people who want to do more than only throwing money into slot-machines.
Most of the big theme hotels are lined up along the Las Vegas Boulevard, the main street of the city which is also known as “the strip”. Walk along this street and have a look into some of the casino-hotels at night when the city is a work of art build from blinking neon lights in all colors. In the hotel Venetian for example you find a copy of Canale Grande in Venice and the sky above is artificial.
Or watch the eruption of a volcano inside the huge pool in front of the hotel The Mirage. This spectacle is performed several times per hour every night.
- Pros:If you win the jackpot you're millionaire
- Cons:I've never won the jackpot
- In a nutshell:All the things your mother told you not to do - and it's exiting

a really useful page for someone like me who is looking at Vegas hotels
Nice tips on those wierd theme-park hotels! I guess you don't really have to go anywhere else in the world except Las Vegas, because it's all there on a scale of 1:3.
Vegas zum verwoehnen, auch nicht schlecht. great shots Bernd!!
Hi Bernd, we did have a great time in Vegas! I really enjoyed looking at your page and it sure brought back the memories. We hope to return next year :o)
Why would I go Vegas when I hate gambling ? but now I think I really like the night view of all the hotels ..they are gorgeous ...is there a Hotels tour ? Ok, another city on my list
Great info on all the big resorts and I like your nighttime photos. Did you use a tripod for these? I'll be visiting Vegas in Oct and hope to get some good shots too. Also thanks for visiting my Ontario page.
